Business Travel Tip: Getting an International Driver's License ...

When businessmen travel, it is expected that part of the time spent in the destination is going to be ?sightseeing.? This does not necessarily mean sightseeing in the traditional tourist sense, but instead looking at sights in the business context. This can include things like the facilities used by a potential supplier or business partner, or conducting an ocular inspection of the new property that the company is looking to purchase for its branch office. obviously, when going from one location to another on a business trip, it is likely that the businessman gets a cab ? they have to get to their destination from a hotel somehow. This is, of course, an additional expense that some executives would want to do away with. While it may be difficult to acquire, cutting out room in the budget for cabs is a benefit for getting an international driving permit.the purpose of an international driving permit is, of course, to allow a person to drive in other countries, where their native driver?s license would not be honored. in the US, these permits are issued only by the American Automobile Association and the National Automobile Club. There are recommendations from the State Department to avoid purchasing or applying for an IDP from other organizations.Anyone applying for one of these should understand all of the details. an IDP can be issued to anyone who is over 18, with the additional requirement of having had possessed a valid driver?s license for a minimum period of six months. these permits are valid for a period of up to one year or the expiration of an existing license. Application forms are available from the offices and websites of AAA or the National Automobile Club. After filling the forms out, send them in via mail or visiting the local office of the appropriate organization.Regardless of how the forms are sent in, the applicant must bring a check for the fee, usually amounting to no more than $15. a signed copy of the valid US driver?s license will also be needed, as well as two photos, passport-sized.AAA offices are actually capable of processing an application within a single visit. Mailing them in can slow it down to a period of 10 to 15 business days, while having it expedited can shorten the waiting time to just one or two business days. AAA also advises people to bring their valid US driver?s license when driving internationally, as a support document for the IDP.
