Is it possible to survive breast cancer with early detection? | Breast ...

With early detection and early, aggressive treatment, almost all breast cancer sufferers survive it (around 80% of women survive with or without early detection). Thanks to a lot of very dedicated and very loud cancer awareness supporters, breast cancer is one of the most treatable and advanced sciences in medicine. Particularly, if your mother has already gone through menopause, her chances of her cancer being slow growing are very high. Since she?s getting routine mammograms, if there is anything there, it has been detected early, and she most likely has good insurance. Unfortunately, insurance makes a big difference in survival rates. The best treatments are still very costly. If she does not have insurance, medicaid will cover her now, however, and that?s good news.

Remember that mammograms detect all kinds of tumors ? not just cancerous ones. Hang in there, and try to stay calm. Encourage your mother to educate herself on cancer, either way. I hope she comes back with good news.

Beyond High-Sounding Ideas | Law and Disorder

?An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory. ?? ~Friedrich Engels~

I am not a Bible geek or thumper, but most certainly that book is loaded with wisdom and thought-provoking ideas worthy of your study time.? This Jewish-born fellah thumbs through it on occasion.

My thumb hit this passage from Psalms:? ?To you Lord, I call; my Rock , do not be deft to my cry, lest, if you answer me with silence, I become like those who go down to the abyss.?? David?s lament is still relevant, isn?t it?? We all sometimes feel forsaken and alone.? The question is, What will we do about it other than pray??? It gets you thinking, doesn?t it?

My shelves are lined with inspiring, thought-provoking motivational and self-help tapes.? The titles themselves get me excited:? The Strangest Secret, Achieving Credibility, Lifetime Strategies for Personal Effectiveness, Conversation Power, Your Secret Wealth, The Power of Purpose, The Art of Exceptional Living, Cultivating an Unshakable Character, How to be a No-Limit Person, How to Beat Talent, Brains and Education, The Psychology of Selling, The Focused Mind State, Take Charge of Your Life, Coping With Difficult People, The New Dynamics of Goal Setting, The Science of Getting Rich, Leadership Mastery Course, Unleash Your Greatness.? Each is recorded by outstanding, successful people and all but two recordings for the largest self-help/motivational organization in the world, Nightingale-Conant.

Moreover, each of these eight-hour recordings are more than bookshelf dwellers to me ? they are the fuel which energize my life.? Nearly half of these eight-hour recordings I have transcribed, so that I could further embed them in my conscious and subconscious mind.

I am a student of life, a philosopher, a teacher, a writer and in recent years an inspired entrepreneur who wants to spread the gospel of empowerment through self-improvement to all.

We each read good books, watch inspiring movies, and see random, touching acts of courage in our daily lives.? When meeting such ideas and people, we think the world is good and there must be something more to life than three square meals, a 40-hour grind in the big city, a comfy bath, and a glass of Chardonnays before shuteye.

And there is.? Life is what you make or make of it.? I encourage everyone reading this message, to take up anyone of the Nightingale-Conant themes above, set aside an hour at home or during your commute each day, download as much material as you can on the topic which piqued your curiosity?and get down to work in mastering the principles which could change your life and the life of those whom you daily touch for the better.

Grandiose ideas are delectable to chew on, but true happiness begins when one decides that the ideas and the people who express them are God?s very special present to us all.? You were born to be rich in every aspect of that word.? No shame, endless gain.

When you turn your learning into earning, endless possibilities unfold for doing good and being good.? Random acts of kindness can become predictable.

Now doesn?t that resonate with you?? I certainly hope so.

GameStop testing a console game streaming service - News - play.tm

GameStop is currently in the early phases of beta-testing on a console game streaming service.

The US retailer recently bought Spawn Labs, a company that specialises in peer-to-peer game streaming services with an eye to evolving their technology into a cloud-based service.

Tony Bartel, GameStop president, revealed: "Spawn recently began its first beta and is currently live, testing the streaming of Xbox 360, PS3 and PC games from a data centre in Austin, Texas."

He continued: "There's a whole cadre of services that GameStop can offer far beyond just Spawn. The beauty of Spawn is it can take a very large assortment of games. There's really no restriction versus an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game. We're also experimenting with PC game delivery as well, but we can take that to any Internet-connected device including TV. So clearly, it's part of our acquisition forethought. We anticipated being involved in smart TVs as well."

Types Of Mountain Biking ? Flickrz Article Directory

As a sport or a hobby, mountain biking can be split
into 9 different categories. These categories are
very versed in what they offer. They are:

1. BMX
BMX is a style where the bikes offer 20 inch wheels.
These bikes are commonly used at skate parks or
with dirt jumps. Because of their smaller wheels
and shorter wheel bases, BMX bikes are much easier
to perform tricks and stunts with.

2. Cross country
This type of mountain biking involves riding your
bike up and down hills. Although it?s the least
extreme form of mountain biking, most cross country
riders are very fit and go on long rides.

3. Cyclo cross
This is a cross between road and mountain biking.
These riders have to go over obstacles, cross through
rivers, and race on and off the course.

4. Dirt jumping
Dirt jumping involves jumping the bike over large
man made dirt jumps then doing tricks while they
are in the air. These jumps are normally close
together so riders can go over six or more jumps
in one run, gaining a flow to give them more
speed for bigger jumps.

5. Downhill
Downhill mountain biking involves racing downhill
as fast as possible. This type of riding is very
intense and extreme, offering riders the chance
for ultimate thrills and excitement.

6. Freeride
Free riding involves finding the perfect line down
the mountain using all of the terrain to express
yourself. These competitions are very popular,
as riders can express themselves any way they see
fit.

7. Single speed
No to be confused with fixed gears, this is a form
of cross country biking that?s done using a bike
with only one gear and fewer components. The idea
with single speed is simplicity. The straight
chain line will provide efficient pedaling, and
the lack of components mean less mechanical
problems and a lighter bike.

8. Street and urban
This type of riding involves riding in urban areas,
ledges, and other types of man made obstacles.
Riders of street and urban biking will do tricks
as well, such as stalls and grinds.

9. Trails
Trials are considered an aspect of mountain biking,
although the bikes used look nothing like mountain
bikes. They use 20 or 26 inch wheels and sport
small, low frames. Trail riders will hop and
jump their bikes over obstacles, which requires
an extreme amount of balance and concentration.

St Louis Mortgage Lending and Refinance: No Loan Modification Help ...

On November 1, 2010, new guidelines released by Fannie Mae will mean that unemployed homeowners cannot count jobless benefits as income when applying for mortgage loan modification programs on loans backed by Fannie Mae.

Fannie Mae wanted the nation to know that they were not doing this to make it harder for borrowers to seek help. They were merely broadening the ban already in place by the Treasury Department.

Since this major change, those who are unemployed may still apply for HAMP but they will now be considered for a forbearance plan which could include a reduced payment for at least three months.

But this suspension apparently goes further. Fannie Mae also prevents banks from using unemployment benefits in their own loan modification programs if the loan is backed by Fannie Mae.

This definitely hurts the economy since this group accounts for most of the new mortgage delinquencies. Most were hoping to use their benefits as income to help them save their home.

It only makes sense that bank modifications are growing by leaps and bounds since HAMP has in essence been a complete failure.

About 448,000 consumers have received permanent loan modifications under HAMP in August of 2010 which was up from 423,000 a month earlier.

In addition, another 46,900 fell out of the HAMP program in August 2010.

Then there is the trial period that includes approximately 202,753 mortgage payers who will be evaluated to see if they are able to continue financially with their new lower payment.

Of those who fall out of the program, some 44.5 percent of them receive other types of modifications from their servicers.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 13.9 percent default again on their new loan modification and wind up in foreclosure. Thus, many mortgage owners have to look to other alternatives such as a principal reduction program.

It is a tragedy that those who deservingly receive unemployment benefits can no longer use these funds to qualify for a HAMP modification all thanks to Fannie Mae who themselves are a trouble mortgage company.

Could stage 4 breast cancer go undetected on a mammogram?

Could stage 4 breast cancer go undetected on a mammogram?
I was reading an article in the newspaper about a 62 year old woman that had a clean mammogram. A month after this she found a lump and was then diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Is this possible?

Answer by sectumsempra_2006
It cant go undetected. Unless the machine is faulty.

Answer by Susan
Anything is possible. The mammogram report could come back reading negative for suspicious breast cancer when it?s positive, it does happen often. the radiologist may misread it especially new radiologists. usually it takes a biopsy to say for sure that it?s positive. A lump has to be the size of a pea to even show up on a mammogram. She may have a had a fast growing tumor. I cured myself of breast cancer naturally with raw foods, eleven years ago. Still in perfect health. Nurse Sue

Tropical Storm Gert nears Bermuda

This NOAA satellite image taken Sunday, August 14, 2011 at 01:45 PM EDT shows Tropical Storm Gert located about 275 miles southeast of Bermuda. Gert is moving northwest near 7 mph with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. To the southeast of Gert, a trough of low pressure located about 425 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands continues to produce limited showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are expected to remain only marginally conducive for development over the next couple of days due to the proximity of Tropical Storm Gert. This system has a medium chance, 30 percent, of a becoming a tropical cyclone during the next couple of days as it moves toward the northwest at 15 to 20 mph. (AP PHOTO/WEATHER UNDERGROUND)

(AP) ? People in Bermuda hauled their boats onto beaches and shuttered their homes as Tropical Storm Gert neared the wealthy British archipelago on Monday.

A tropical storm warning was is in effect for Bermuda, though the National Hurricane Center in Miami forecast only 1 to 3 inches of rainfall for the isolated island chain.

Gert, the seventh tropical storm of this year's Atlantic hurricane season, was moving north at 14 mph (22 kph) and had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph). The storm, which formed Sunday afternoon, is expected near or just east of Bermuda on Monday. It is projected to remain well away from the U.S. East Coast.

"We're gearing up for a windy night and perhaps some showers, but we should fare pretty well up here," said Jeff Torgerson, a meteorologist with the Bermuda Weather Service.

Steven and Eileen Chapman, of the south London borough of Croydon, which was impacted by last week's riots across England, said the tropical storm would not crimp their vacation to Bermuda with their two boys.

"It seems very peaceful in Bermuda in comparison to Croydon," said Steven Chapman, who has visited Bermuda 14 times before. "We're not concerned about the storm. The hotel has not advertised it as a major concern."

Most residents of Bermuda, where basic storm preparations are a familiar routine, were also taking it in stride.

"Right now it's a baby. We're paying attention to it, but people here don't get worked up about storms this size," said Francis Mahoney of Bermuda Yacht Services, a provider of emergency marine services.

Bermuda requires newly built houses to withstand sustained winds of 110 mph (177 kph). It also has a sturdy infrastructure with many of its power and phone lines underground.

Below Gert, a trough of low pressure located some 425 miles (684 kilometer) north-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands is generating some showers and thunderstorms.

U.S. forecasters said Sunday afternoon that this system has about a 30 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next two days. It was moving west-northwest at about 15 mph (24 kph), according to the Hurricane Center.

Increased tropical forest growth could release carbon from the soil

Monday, August 15, 2011

A new study shows that as climate change enhances tree growth in tropical forests, the resulting increase in litterfall could stimulate soil micro-organisms leading to a release of stored soil carbon.

The research was led by scientists from the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and the University of Cambridge, UK. The results are published online today in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change.

The researchers used results from a six-year experiment in a rainforest at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, Central America, to study how increases in litterfall - dead plant material such as leaves, bark and twigs which fall to the ground - might affect carbon storage in the soil. Their results show that extra litterfall triggers an effect called 'priming' where fresh carbon from plant litter provides much-needed energy to micro-organisms, which then stimulates the decomposition of carbon stored in the soil.

Lead author Dr Emma Sayer from the UK's Centre for Ecology & Hydrology said, "Most estimates of the carbon sequestration capacity of tropical forests are based on measurements of tree growth. Our study demonstrates that interactions between plants and soil can have a massive impact on carbon cycling. Models of climate change must take these feedbacks into account to predict future atmospheric carbon dioxide levels."

The study concludes that a large proportion of the carbon sequestered by greater tree growth in tropical forests could be lost from the soil. The researchers estimate that a 30% increase in litterfall could release about 0.6 tonnes of carbon per hectare from lowland tropical forest soils each year. This amount of carbon is greater than estimates of the climate-induced increase in forest biomass carbon in Amazonia over recent decades. Given the vast land surface area covered by tropical forests and the large amount of carbon stored in the soil, this could affect the global carbon balance.

Tropical forests play an essential role in regulating the global carbon balance. Human activities have caused carbon dioxide levels to rise but it was thought that trees would respond to this by increasing their growth and taking up larger amounts of carbon. However, enhanced tree growth leads to more dead plant matter, especially leaf litter, returning to the forest floor and it is unclear what effect this has on the carbon cycle.

Dr Sayer added, "Soils are thought to be a long-term store for carbon but we have shown that these stores could be diminished if elevated carbon dioxide levels and nitrogen deposition boost plant growth."

Co-author Dr Edmund Tanner, from the University of Cambridge, said, "This priming effect essentially means that older, relatively stable soil carbon is being replaced by fresh carbon from dead plant matter, which is easily decomposed. We still don't know what consequences this will have for carbon cycling in the long term."

Tony Iommi denies report of Black Sabbath reunion (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi on Tuesday denied a report that the veteran British rock band was getting back together in its four man original line-up.

British paper The Birmingham Mail had reported that Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward had begun rehearsing for a tour and a new studio album for release next year.

It quoted Iommi, 63, as saying the original foursome, which dates back to 1969, was looking forward to performing together again.

But in a statement on his official website on Tuesday, Iommi said he was just speculating and described the report as "absolute nonsense."

Iommi said the journalist had taken "a conversation we had back in June and made it sound like we spoke yesterday about a Black Sabbath reunion.

"At the time I was supporting the Home of Metal exhibition and was merely speculating, shooting the breeze, on something all of us get asked constantly, "Are you getting back together?"

"Thanks to the Internet it's gone round the world as some sort of "official" statement on my part, absolute nonsense," Iommi said, apologizing to his three bandmates.

Osbourne was fired from the band in 1979, leading to a revolving line-up for a number of years. The original members got back together for the 1998 album "Reunion" but split again afterward.

BUILD YOUR SELF ESTEEM | Stress Management

?

So how do you stay calm, composed and maintain self esteem in a tough environment? Here are some tips you may to consider as a starter guide to self improvement.

Imagine yourself as a Dart Board. Everything and everyone else around you may become Dart Pins, at one point or another. These dart pins will destroy your self esteem and pull you down in ways you won?t even remember. Don?t let them destroy you, or get the best of you. So which dart pins should you avoid?

Dart Pin #1 : Negative Work Environment
Beware of ?dog eat dog? theory where everyone else is fighting just to get ahead. This is where non-appreciative people usually thrive. No one will appreciate your contributions even if you miss lunch and dinner, and stay up late. Most of the time you get to work too much without getting help from people concerned. Stay out of this, it will ruin your self esteem. Competition is at stake anywhere. Be healthy enough to compete, but in a healthy competition that is.

Dart Pin #2: Other People?s Behavior
Bulldozers, brown nosers, gossipmongers, whiners, backstabbers, snipers, people walking wounded, controllers, naggers, complainers, exploders, patronizers, sluffers? all these kinds of people will pose bad vibes for your self esteem, as well as to your self improvement scheme.

Dart Pin #3: Changing Environment
You can?t be a green bug on a brown field. Changes challenge our paradigms. It tests our flexibility, adaptability and alters the way we think. Changes will make life difficult for awhile, it may cause stress but it will help us find ways to improve our selves. Change will be there forever, we must be susceptible to it.

Dart Pin #4: Past Experience
It?s okay to cry and say ?ouch!? when we experience pain. But don?t let pain transform itself into fear. It might grab you by the tail and swing you around. Treat each failure and mistake as a lesson.

Dart Pin #5: Negative World View
Look at what you?re looking at. Don?t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In building self esteem, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.

Dart Pin #6: Determination Theory
The way you are and your behavioral traits is said to be a mixed end product of your inherited traits (genetics), your upbringing (psychic), and your environmental surroundings such as your spouse, the company, the economy or your circle of friends. You have your own identity. If your father is a failure, it doesn?t mean you have to be a failure too. Learn from other people?s experience, so you?ll never have to encounter the same mistakes.

Sometimes, you may want to wonder if some people are born leaders or positive thinkers. NO. Being positive, and staying positive is a choice. Building self esteem and drawing lines for self improvement is a choice, not a rule or a talent. God wouldn?t come down from heaven and tell you ? ?George, you may now have the permission to build self esteem and improve your self.?

In life, its hard to stay tough specially when things and people around you keep pulling you down. When we get to the battle field, we should choose the right luggage to bring and armors to use, and pick those that are bullet proof. Life?s options give us arrays of more options. Along the battle, we will get hit and bruised. And wearing a bullet proof armor ideally means ?self change?. The kind of change which comes from within. Voluntarily. Armor or Self Change changes 3 things: our attitude, our behavior and our way of thinking.

Building self esteem will eventually lead to self improvement if we start to become responsible for who we are, what we have and what we do. Its like a flame that should gradually spread like a brush fire from inside and out. When we develop self esteem, we take control of our mission, values and discipline. Self esteem brings about self improvement, true assessment, and determination. So how do you start putting up the building blocks of self esteem? Be positive. Be contented and happy. Be appreciative. Never miss an opportunity to compliment. A positive way of living will help you build self esteem, your starter guide to self improvement.

Instant view: Fitch affirms U.S. triple-A rating (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Fitch Ratings said it was keeping the United States' long-term credit rating at AAA with a stable outlook, less than two weeks after Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S.

KEY POINTS: * "The affirmation of the US 'AAA' sovereign rating reflects the fact that the key pillars of US's exceptional credit-worthiness remains intact: its pivotal role in the global financial system and the flexible, diversified and wealthy economy that provides its revenue base," Fitch said in a statement. * "Fitch will review its fiscal projections in light of the outcome of the deliberations of the Joint Select committee (due by end November) as well as its near and medium-term economic outlook for the US by the end of the year," it said. * "An upward revision to Fitch's medium to long-term projections for public debt either as a result of weaker than expected economic recovery or the failure of the Joint Select Committee to reach agreement on at least USD1.2trn of deficit-reduction measures would likely result in negative rating action," it said.

COMMENTS:

PETER CARDILLO, CHIEF MARKET ECONOMIST, ROCKWELL GLOBAL CAPITAL, NEW YORK

"I don't see where that has much significance at this point, it's good, but obviously we were downgraded, and we did suffer from that downgrade. It sort of validates their opinion, which is supportive to the market but I think the real concern is not so much the downgrade now but the performance of the economy."

PETER BOOCKVAR, EQUITY STRATEGIST, MILLER TABAK + CO, NEW YORK

"In contrast to S&P who immersed themselves directly in the U.S. political process and didn't even wait to see what the Congressional committee would come up with in November in terms of budget cuts, Fitch is taking a more patient role as they reiterate the AAA rating of the U.S. with a stable outlook but with caveats and an eye toward November."

BRET BARKER, PORTFOLIO MANAGER, TCW, LOS ANGELES:

"Fitch news is not entirely unexpected. They were no where close to being as aggressive as Standard & Poor's. Market expected Moody's and Fitch to maintain the AAA status."

JERRY WEBMAN, CHIEF ECONOMIST, OPPENHEIMER FUNDS, NEW YORK

"Two of the three opinions are AAA, one is a tiny bit less at AA-plus. It is important to see what they are saying because the critical thing about the S&P statement was its comment on the 'willingness to pay' issue and not the 'ability to pay' issue, which is why S&P rankled so many nerves."

ANTHONY VALERI, FIXED INCOME STRATEGIST, LPL FINANCIAL, SAN DIEGO

"This goes largely as expected. They have hinted at affirming the rating several weeks back. This market is still jittery. We did not need more bad news so this is a positive."

JACK ABLIN, CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER, HARRIS PRIVATE BANK, CHICAGO:

"My sense is they're (Fitch) looking more at credit-worthiness and less at profit. There are really two issues with sovereign debt -- there's ability and there's willingness. I think S&P spent more time on the willingness

and the process than it did on the ability... The good news is that S&P's process has changed the environment in Washington."

STEVE GOLDMAN, MARKET STRATEGIST, WEEDEN & CO. GREENWICH, CONNECTICUT:

"I think they're looking at a broader perspective than S&P in the global aspects and how the intricacies of the dollar were lost kind of the initial data inputs... it's giving a sigh of relief to investors here.

"The greatest concern for investors on sovereign debt issues related to the United States would higher interest rates, and we're not seeing any of that. For the markets, we've had a nice bounce... valuations are vastly improving."

JANE CARON, CHIEF ECONOMIC STRATEGIST, DWIGHT ASSET MANAGEMENT, BURLINGTON, VERMONT

"Fitch's approach is focusing on the United States' ability to pay principal and interest payments, which really no one doubts. No one is worried about getting paid.

"The larger story here is to get our arms around the growth rate of our debt. How you go about coming to an approach to budget control could determine whether we could go into a recession in the near term?

"People will take this in stride. This is not going to cause a big shift in sentiment in the marketplace."

PIERRE ELLIS, SENIOR ECONOMIST, DECISION ECONOMICS, NEW YORK:

"S&P had a very specific basis for their concern which was that there was no long-run plan for budget control.

"Fitch certainly is correct with respect to the breadth of the United States' potential revenue sources, but it is choosing not to look at the implied demand on that revenue in the entitlements budget as it now stands. It is putting a little more faith in the common sense of Congress and the Administration with respect to getting the budget situation under control."

BORIS SCHLOSSBERG, DIRECTOR OF CURRENCY RESEARCH, GFT, JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY:

"It is helping risk a little bit. All the futures tightened up a little bit. Small boost to risk assets but all eyes are on the summit. That will be the big headline of the day."

OMER ESINER, SENIOR MARKET ANALYST, COMMONWEALTH FOREIGN EXCHANGE, WASHINGTON

"I think this should provide a some scope for further improvement in risk appetite. Stocks will push a bit higher and ironically the dollar will struggle as it loses some of its safe-haven bid. Generally speaking, though, there was never any real concern about Fitch or Moody's downgrading the U.S., so I don't think this is going to have much market reaction. The bigger story today is the meeting between (France's President Nicholas) Sarkozy and (Germany's Angela) Merkel. If markets are disappointed by the results of that, we could see risk aversion come back."

MARKET REACTION: STOCKS: U.S. stock index futures were closed at the time BONDS: U.S. bond prices pared earlier gains FOREX: The dollar rose against the yen

Researchers discover new genetic clue in the development of rheumatoid arthritis

Monday, August 15, 2011

Scientists at Mount Sinai Hospital, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Toronto, University Health Network and McGill University have obtained significant new insights into the causes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune disorders including type 1 diabetes, lupus and Graves disease.

The findings represent a key initial step in realizing the full potential of genomics and personalized medicine.

In a study published online today in Nature Genetics, Dr. Katherine Siminovitch and her team identified the exact means by which an alteration in the gene PTPN22 increases risk for RA and other autoimmune disorders. The study used advanced genomics technologies that enable testing of millions of genetic markers in a single experiment to identify genes, such as PTPN22, that confer risk for disease.

The team then generated a mouse genetic model to show how the PTPN22 gene mutation impairs immune cell function and then validating their findings in humans, taking their discovery from the laboratory bench to the clinic.

The result: a more accurate understanding of how autoimmune conditions develop, and how new diagnostic tests and targeted therapies can be designed for better symptom control and potential cure.

"Our findings are particularly exciting because this study sets a new precedent for studying arthritis and other autoimmune disorders," said lead author Dr. Siminovitch, Senior Investigator and the Sherman Family Research Chair in Genomic Medicine at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital, a professor at the University of Toronto, and Director of the Fred A. Litwin & Family Centre in Genetic Medicine.

"This is one of the first studies in which we have traced the steps that connect a specific genetic lesion to the development of a common, complex autoimmune condition."

Led by Dr. Siminovitch, the group used genetically modified mice in which PTPN22 had been altered to mimic a genetic mutation found in many RA patients. The effects of this change on immune cells were observed in the mice, and the studies were then repeated in human blood samples from patients with and without RA. By this means, the group honed in on the impact of a key protein called Lyp/Pep that?in healthy cells?prevents the hyper-immune responses that lead to autoimmune disorders. The group found that this gene mutation leads to decreased levels of Lyp, thereby removing a natural brake that normally prevents the inflammatory processes underlying RA and many other autoimmune conditions.

"Measuring levels of this protein will help us monitor disease severity in patients with autoimmune disorders, test the effects of various therapies including new drugs, and determine which treatments work best in specific patients," said Dr. Edward Keystone, co-author of the study and Director of the Rebecca MacDonald Centre for Arthritis and Autoimmune Disease at Mount Sinai Hospital. "We are truly seeing genomics in action with this study, and the results give us new hope for improving patient outcomes."

Dr. Keystone emphasized the importance of this type of research to the practice of medicine in general, noting that advances in genetics knowledge are allowing for earlier diagnoses and more personalized treatments that give patients better outcomes.

"Using the powerful genetic tools now available, previously cryptic diseases are being dissected and their underlying causes identified," said Dr. Jim Woodgett, the Lunenfeld's Director of Research. "Drs. Siminovitch and Keystone are at the leading edge of employing these genomic approaches for the benefit of patients, seamlessly combining their research skills with clinical insights."

(AP) ? Hundreds of mourners gathered Monday at the Indiana State Fairgrounds to remember five people killed when high winds caused an outdoor stage to collapse onto an audience awaiting the start of a country music concert.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels told the roughly 500 mourners that the tragedy has broken the hearts of the state's residents. He became emotional as he praised those who rushed to the stage to help the injured.

"I cannot tell you how proud I am," Daniels said, his voice cracking, "to be the employee of six and half million people like that."

Daniels said Saturday's stage collapse was especially sad because the state fair is "a family reunion of all Hoosiers," where farmers and city dwellers gather for fun.

Steven and Amanda Potaczek of the band 1,000 Generations opened the service with "Fail Us Not," a song they wrote when one of their friends died in 2008. Amanda Potaczek said the song is keeping trust in God when tragedies happen.

"Stuff like this does not defeat him," she said.

Wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph toppled the stage Saturday night as an estimated 12,000 people were waiting to see the band Sugarland. About four dozen people, some critically injured, were taken to hospitals.

As Monday's service drew to a close, five young people lined up in front of the stage holding bouquets of flowers in honor of the dead as the victim's names were read aloud.

Indiana's first lady Cheri Daniels, who presides over fair events each year, said there are two options when tragedy strikes: to give up or rebuild.

"We have decided that we want to take heart and rebuild," she said, as the state fair reopened following a one-day closure.

Daniels ordered flags at the fairgrounds flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.

Four of the victims died at the scene: Alina Bigjohny, 23, of Fort Wayne; Christina Santiago, 29, of Chicago; Tammy Vandam, 42, of Wanatah; and 49-year-old Glenn Goodrich of Indianapolis. Nathan Byrd, a 51-year-old stagehand from Indianapolis who was atop the rigging when it fell, died overnight.

Nathan Byrd's older brother Randy Byrd, 54 of Indianapolis, said his brother was always a daredevil. Friends and colleagues knew he would fearlessly scale stage rigs, and dubbed him "Save-the-Show Nate," Randy Byrd said.

The Byrd family sat at the front of the service, red-eyed and wiping away tears. Nathan Byrd's daughter, Natalie, remembered her father as a man who loved making everyone laugh.

"Nathan meant everything in the world to me," said Loretta Byrd, Nathan's mother.

Santiago managed programming for the Lesbian Community Care Project at Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago and was named to the Windy City Times' "30 Under 30" list in 2007.

Jamal M. Edwards, the center's president and CEO, said she was one of the organization's "brightest stars" and worked to improve the lives of women, especially those who were lesbian, bisexual and transgender. Santiago attended the concert with her partner, Alisha Brennon, who was severely injured, Edwards said.

Bigjohny had been recently hired to teach seventh grade in Muncie, The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reported.

Kayla Sollers, 20, attended Manchester College with Bigjohny. She drove down from the campus Monday morning, bringing a sign with pictures of Bigjohny that read "Rejoice in Paradise. Alina Bigjohny."

"She was full of life, energetic and caring," Sollers said.

After the service, the quickly reopened, while visitors paid their respects to the five victims.

David and Jennifer Dominianni from the Indianapolis suburb of Fishers brought their 7-year-old daughter and 8-month-old son, in part so they could honor the dead and show their daughter the stage wreckage.

Jennifer Dominianni said they told their daughter about the accident because they don't like to hide things from her.

"She said, 'That's where they lost their lives?' And we said yes. She understands that it was a tragedy," Dominianni said.

The family visited a makeshift memorial to the victims covered in flowers and wreaths, she said.

Only then did the family proceed on to indulge in "kids stuff" at the fair, heading off to see cows, hogs and baby chicks in the various livestock barns.

Daniels has said the wind burst was a "fluke" that no one could have foreseen. Dan McCarthy, chief meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Indiana, said the gust was far stronger than those in other areas of the fairgrounds.

The seemingly capricious nature of the gust was evident Sunday at the fair. A striped tent near the grandstand appeared unscathed, as did an aluminum trailer about 50 yards across from the grandstand. The Ferris wheel on the midway also escaped damage.

First Sgt. Dave Bursten of the Indiana State Police said the lack of damage to structures on the fair's midway or elsewhere supported the weather service's belief that an isolated, significant wind gust caused the rigging to topple.

"All of us know without exception in Indiana the weather can change from one report to another report, and that was the case here," he said.

Fair officials had begun preparing in case they needed to evacuate visitors for the impending storm. Additional state troopers had been moved to the grandstand to help in the event of an evacuation, state police said.

Concert-goers and other witnesses said an announcer warned them of impending bad weather but gave conflicting accounts of whether emergency sirens sounded at the fair.

Meteorologist John Hendrickson said it's not unusual for strong winds to precede a thunderstorm, and that Saturday's gust might have been channeled through the stage area by buildings on either side of the dirt track where the stage fell, at the bottom of the grandstand.

The Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration and state fire marshal were investigating. The probe could take months, Bursten said.

The owner of Mid-America Sound Corp., which installed the rigging, expressed sympathy for the families of those killed or injured. Kerry Darrenkamp also said the Greenfield, Ind.-based company had begun "an independent internal investigation to understand, to the best of our ability, what happened."

Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland sent a statement to The Associated Press through her marketing manager, saying she watched video of the collapse on the news "in horror."

"I am so moved," she said. "Moved by the grief of those families who lost loved ones. Moved by the pain of those who were injured and the fear of their families."

The duo ? composed of Nettles and Kristian Bush ? canceled their Sunday show at the Iowa State Fair.
