German foreign minister to visit Sudan, unveils new Africa strategy
During his three-day trip, Westerwelle will meet leaders in the capital Khartoum, visit Darfur and travel to the south of the country, which is due to declare independence next month.
Germany will chair the United Nations Security Council leadership in July, overseeing the admission of South Sudan to the United Nations after its independence on July 9.
Westerwelle returned briefly to Berlin late Tuesday after a trip to the Libyan rebel-held city of Benghazi, Israel and the West Bank at the start of the week.
Before departing for Sudan, Westerwelle is to present the government\'s new Africa strategy which was approved early Wednesday by Chancellor Angela Merkel\'s cabinet.
Germany is offering Africa\'s 53 states a \'partnership of equals,\' focusing on \'peace and security in our neighbourhood,\' according to the 29-page strategy document.
At the same time, Berlin recognizes the business opportunities offered by the continent and its population of more than a billion people. On average, African economic growth lay at 6 per cent in recent years.
