Fandom Five: 'X-Men: First Class,' 'Torchwood' Adds Eliza Dushku and is WonderCon Moving?

Your weekly rundown of what the cool kids, and by that I mean geeks, nerds and dorks who now run the world, are talking about.

1. X-Men: First Class is Here!

It?s got an 87 percent fresh ranking on Rotten Tomatoes and everyone is saying how much they like it and how the movie revives Fox?s X-Men franchise. Well, almost everyone. The Los Angeles Times rains on the parade by saying the movie has ?all the tension of a water balloon fight.? The chick must have had a boring childhood cuz my water balloons fights were epic.

2. DC Comics Relaunches, Reboots, Renumbers

In an unprecedented move and with great media fanfare, DC Comics is relaunching its entire line of comics and will roll out 52 No. 1 issues in September. The books will almost all have new creative teams; heroes will have newly designed costumes; and stories will move in new directions. (Remember how there was all that attention paid to a new Wonder Woman direction or the new Superman ?Walk Across America? storyline not too long ago? All that?s gone.)

There?s a lot of potential here, with the new Justice League written by Geoff Johns and art by Jim Lee will lead the charge. And showing the importance of Green Lantern, which hits movie theaters in two weeks, there will now be four GL-related books.

3. Saying ?BotCon? Can Be Tricky

Transformers: Dark of the Moon has become one of the summer?s most highly anticipated movies thanks to some stellar footage. What better way to get into the swing of things than by going to the 17th Annual Transformers Convention in Pasadena this weekend. BotCon 2011 will preview the new line of Hasbro toys and EA and Activision video games while dealers sell and trade 25-plus years of robot toys and memorabilia.

Michael Bay will be on hand Saturday to accept the honor of being inducted into the Transformers Hall of Fame and is said to be bringing some surprises.

4. Eliza Dushku Meets Torchwood

Eliza Dushku, who starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse (and is appearing in White Collar), has a legion of followers. Torchwood, the witty BBC sci-fi show, has a legion of followers as well. So a project pairing them should get a lot of people excited.

Dushku will voicestar in an online animated motion comic series based on the upcoming series Torchwood: Miracle Day, playing on Starz. The motion comic will be called Torchwood: Web of Lies, and will also have voice work by Torchwood stars John Barrowman as Capt. Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper. Will this lead to a Dushku appearance in the live-action show down the line?

5. Will WonderCon Wander Next Year?

This year?s WonderCon, held at San Francisco?s Moscone Center, had a banner year, with almost 49,000 attendees. That?s a big jump from last year, when 39,501 people attended. It?s being favorably compared to the stage at which Comic-Con was 10 years ago, when crowds weren?t such a headache. And it?s a growing place for studios and networks to get a jump on summer movies and programming.

But now comes word that in 2012, the Moscone Center will be undergoing three months of renovations -- at the exact same time that Wonder Con is to be held. The convention can?t take a year off ? technically it could, but it would lose all its great momentum ? so the organizers are now exploring their options.
