Hat tip to Jennifer Deluhery for sending this my way.
The effective communication of scientific research is vital both to the scientific community and to a scientist?s career. ACS Publications has launched the Publishing Your Research 101 video series to assist authors and reviewers in understanding and improving their experience with the processes of writing, submitting, editing, and reviewing manuscripts.
The first episode in the series is an interview with Professor George M. Whitesides from Harvard University who has published nearly 600 papers with ACS Publications (over 1100 articles overall) and has served on the advisory boards of numerous peer-reviewed journals. He is dedicated to communicating science in many forms, as exemplified by the book No Small Matter, with Felice Frankel, which seeks to explain nanoscience to the non-specialist. He has written and given presentations about the authoring process and has a strong commitment to mentoring students to help them improve their skills in communicating science. The video, entitled, ?How to Write a Paper to Communicate your Research,? answers the following questions:
- When should you begin to think about writing up your research for publication?
- How do your students handle your approach of writing while you research?
- How do new technologies help scientists communicate their work?
- How many drafts does each paper undergo? Do you have your papers undergo an internal review?
- Do authors need to be thinking of marketing their articles?
- How concerned should I be about the title and abstract of my papers?
Listen to the short interview with advice on the writing an article. Then listen to the long form, where Whitesides looks at the way in which technology has influenced the way we communicate science today, and speculates on what scientific communication might look like in the future.
