10 essentials for nerds hitting the beach

22 hrs.

Granted, beaches, pools, lakes???the outdoors in general???are not typically regarded as the domain of the nerd. However, there are plenty of products out there designed to help us make the most of the summer.

Star Trek inflatable captain's chair
Starfleet recruiting has hit a rough patch lately. Apparently, they're letting children as young as three rise to the rank of captain. In fact, you can't weigh more than 120 pounds and sit safely in this inflatable Captain's chair. This can only be viewed as a slight to the original Kirk, and he's not taking it lightly. Watch him try to usurp the throne from one of the new breed of younger, nimbler candidates in the video above. $24.99???ThinkGeek via Nerd Approved

Aqua Force crossbow
Think of the Aqua Force crossbow as the grenade launcher in your squirt gun arsenal. It features a pull-and-release action that fires water balloons up to 80 feet. In addition, the weapon includes 50 water balloons and a vinyl practice target that will prepare you for storming the beach. $23.10 ??Amazon via Nerd Approved

Marvel swimsuits and goggles for kids
Even when relaxing at the beach or by the pool, Marvel superheroes are always suited up and ready for action. These swimsuits for kids are available in Captain America, Iron Man and Spider-Man designs and offer built-in flotation, plus?fade-resistant fabric and UV protection. Spider-Man, Iron Man and Hulk goggles are also available with see-through scrims and adjustable straps. If you're a DC fan, you'll have to wait for someone to produce a Batman swimsuit with a utility belt loaded up with his trusty shark repellent. $16.99-$26.99 ??ThinkGeek via Fashionably Geek

Superhero one-piece swimsuits and bikinis
If you're trying to conceal your alter ego, these superhero one-piece swimsuits and bikinis aren't the best costume choices. In fact, they leave quite little to the imagination. The one-piece swimsuits come in Supergirl, Wonder Woman and Batgirl designs. More risqu? bikini designs are also available. $47.99 ??Superherostuff via Fashionably Geek

R2-D2 can cooler
Keep your drinks as cold as Hoth while lounging in the hot suns of Tatooine thanks to his officially licensed metal, insulated R2-D2 can cooler. $15 Australian on eBay???Ikon Collectibles via That's Nerdalicious

More craziness from Nerd Approved:

TARDIS beach towel
This TARDIS towel is perfect for the beach, but you're going to get some strange looks lying there wearing a jacket, bow?tie and a fez. $19.99???ThinkGeek via Nerd Approved

Lightning Storm Super Soaker
The Lightning Storm is a water-blasting Tommy Gun that can hold a whopping 35 ounces of liquid with full?auto-firing up to 25?feet. It's the weapon of choice for beach gangsters and alcohol-free beach bootleggers. $19.97 ??Amazon via Nerd Approved

Spider-Man sunglasses
Again, if the goal is to conceal your secret identity, these crazy looking Spider-Man sunglasses probably aren't going to do the job. Plus, if you fall asleep on the beach while wearing these, the resulting sunburn mark would be hysterical. $15 ??80s Tees via Fashionably Geek

Steampunk sundial wristwatch
Some would say that a monocle, handlebar mustache and a giant sundial/compass wristwatch aren't practical or stylish items to wear while enjoying the great outdoors. Clearly, those people have never flown in a dirigible. This Navitron Steampunk Wrist Compass and Sundial features a sundial, latitude finder and compass (with locking button) ? all of which fold flat for a semi-compact look. $44.99?? ThinkGeek via Fashionably Geek

Dragon pedal boat
Is that the Loch Ness Monster? No, it's a pasty nerd pedaling a dragon-shaped boat. Still, from a distance, you're sure to create a stir at the lake. If it were me, I would take things up a notch by modifying this to breathe fire. $5,000???Hammacher Schlemmer

Follow that police force: Cops in Sarnia, Ont., to tweet their Canada Day calls

TORONTO - Police are often adding new weapons to their arsenal ? this time, they're doing it 140 characters at a time.

On Canada Day, officers in a small southwestern Ontario city will take to Twitter to publish every call they respond to during a day-long "tweet-a-thon" campaign.

"It's sort of a virtual ride-along where people can follow us and see where we're going, what we're doing and what we're dealing with," said Const. Heather Emmons, a spokeswoman for the Sarnia Police Service.

The campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the high volume of calls police typically deal with during busy times like Canada Day.

For the past few years, the force has answered an average of 100 calls during an eight-hour period on the holiday. Most of them relate to public intoxication, disturbances and trespassing.

"Canada Day does tend to be busy for us," she said. "We want to focus on it being a family-friendly day and not let a few rowdy people ruin it for everybody else. "

Emmons said there will be about 30 officers ? double the number dispatched on a typical day ? patrolling the city by car, bicycle and foot. Some will also be stationed at a local McDonald's, the origin of a large number of complaints on the holiday every year.

During Canada Day, an officer on bicycle patrol will send tweets out to the micro-blogging site, with Emmons taking over in the evening from a command post set up in a popular park, where the city's main festivities will be held.

Although every call will be blasted onto Twitter, police don't believe the practice will deter people from calling in emergencies. Emmons said she's going to take extra care not to send tweets which contain identifying information such as names or addresses.

It's not the first time police have used Twitter campaigns to raise awareness about the number of calls they receive.

Last fall, police in Guelph, Ont., held their first "tweet-a-thon" during university frosh week. Since then, they have held two more.

Spokesman Sgt. Doug Pflug said their Twitter feed now has more than 2,200 followers, many of whom joined following the campaigns.

"People have a real curiosity on the job that we do, the type of work we do and the calls we do. Social media is just an extension of that," he said.

"It's a fantastic communication tool. It's a great way to engage the community."

Pflug likened the technology to that of traditional police scanners, which allow the public to listen to emergency calls as they happen.

Twitter also gives the police an opportunity to release information that needs to be sent out accurately and quickly ? like road closures and natural disasters ? without going through traditional news media.

Last year, one of their tweets about a missing person was read on a radio broadcast. A listener heard it, spotted the man's car and contacted police.

"We had an elderly gentleman who was suffering from the early stages of dementia, and he went missing," said Pflug.

"(Officers) found this elderly gentleman in the corn field and he basically wasn't dressed for the weather. Twitter basically saved this gentleman's life."

Pflug says not all calls, particularly those about safety concerns or domestic incidents, are released by police via Twitter or traditional media.

"We can't infringe on the rights of victims or complainants," he said.

Const. Anne Longley, Vancouver police's social media officer, said the service has held three Twitter campaigns since 2010, which have allowed online followers a glimpse of what goes on during an 11-hour police officer's shift.

"Social media has been a very successful way for us to interact with the community that we weren't able to before," she said. "It is interactive. It is not just a way for us to push out a message."

The ServiceMagic Connection | Five Incredible Deck Designs

Looking for a deck that stands out from the rest? Make your backyard a relaxing haven or the perfect entertaining space by opting for one of these incredible designs. They?re perfect for the homeowner who wants anything but a cookie-cutter look.

Once you?ve settled on a design, most of the hard work is done. Simply decide on your material ? wood or composite ? and hire a contractor. In a few short weeks, you?ll be living it up in your new outdoor space.

1. Curved or Circular Decks

Decks don?t have to be square and boring. Why not liven up your backyard by opting for a unique shape? Round or curved decks give ordinary homes some architectural interest. Opt for a deck that forms a semi-circle off the back of your home, or a more traditional-style deck with a circular seating area jutting off to one side. The latter creates a perfect space for a patio table and chairs.

2. Decks with Pergolas

Building a pergola is another great way to add architectural interest to your deck. The height brings an element of grandeur to the backyard. Pergolas are sold in a variety of sizes and designs, from simple to ornate. They can be painted to match your home or deck, and they can also be used as support structures for vines. Pick one up at a home improvement store or have one custom built along with the deck.

3. Outdoor Room Decks

More and more, decks are becoming an extension of the American living room. Modern decks are more than just wooden walkways; they feature elements such as built-in tables and chairs, outdoor kitchens and decorative features like masonry columns and glass railings. Gather inspiration from inside the home to create the perfect outdoor space for entertaining and relaxing.

4. Canopy decks

Protect yourself from the elements and add an element of style by opting for a canopy-style deck. The look is similar to that of a Pergola, but the canopy completely shields you and your guests from sun and rain. Canopy-style decks are ideal for rainy climates, and some are even retractable to allow you to enjoy the sun in good weather. Canopies are also great for adding a pop of color to your backyard space ? they?re available in a wide variety of patterns, colors and designs.

5. Rooftop Decks

Not everyone can pull this off; it depends heavily on how your home or condo building was constructed. But if you have available roof space that can support a deck or you?re building a home from the ground up, why not wow the neighborhood with a rooftop deck? The look is spectacular, and rooftop decks offer unmatched views of the neighborhood or nearby landscape. Of course, building a rooftop deck is a pricey endeavor, but if you can afford it, chances are you will love it.

Getting a family portrait done is a fantastic way to immortalize a moment in time and to ensure that you always remember your family as they were at that moment in time. It's a brilliant way to decorate the home, a perfect keepsake and something that truly belongs in every family home. However a family portrait is only a good thing if it comes out well, and many people are horrified at the idea of a family portrait precisely because they are concerned about something that looks awkward and cheesy, or about looking bad in the photos. To get a great family portrait you need to spend time planning what you want it to look like and you need to make sure that you have prepared yourself for the picture. At the same time you also need to think about how you are going to pose and the positions you want everyone in. This is something that the photographer will talk through with you, but it certainly helps to know what looks good for you and the kind of position you want. Here are some pointers to help your picture come out looking great. Look at Other Portraits First of all you need to think about how you want the portrait to look in terms of your positions and in terms of your surroundings. This is what will set the tone of the image and have the biggest impact on the eventual outcome. When doing this you need then to make sure that you look at some other portraits for ideas. You can do this in Google images, or by asking a friend, and that way you can present to your photographer an approximation of what you want. Have a Trial Run Having a trial run where you take your family portrait yourself with a digital camera is a very good idea to help you choose what to wear and how to look. You might do your makeup in a certain way, or you might do your hair a certain way, and find that although it looks great in person, it doesn't translate well to film. This way you can experiment ready for the day. Coordinate At the same time you need to consider what other people are wearing when you consider your outfit. If you wear something that you think looks good without first consulting the rest of the family, then you can end up looking very odd indeed and you can end up with a picture where everyone looks casual and you're in a ball gown, or where everyone is in a completely different outfit. Work together on this one and try to coordinate colors too (though not too much which is creepy...). Practice Expressions As well as doing your dress rehearsal you should also practice trying out different expressions which will allow you to ensure you have your most photogenic face on on the day. Some tips are to find your best side, and to angle your head in a way that keeps your jaw defined.

Greek bank worker plunges to death from Acropolis

    Orestis Panagiotou/EPA

Tourists visit the archaeological site immediately beneath the south side of the Athens Acropolis where a 42-year-old bank employee reportedly committed suicide Thursday.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

ATHENS - A Greek bank worker plunged to his death from the Acropolis on Thursday, in what police said could be the latest in a growing number of suicides caused by economic suffering in the debt-ridden nation.?

The man was in his 40s and worked at Greece's troubled state-owned agricultural lender, ATEbank. He took a break shortly after starting work in the morning but never returned, police said.?

"Guards and tourists saw him at the spot before the jump," a police official said on condition of anonymity.?

"Others heard a loud scream and saw him lying on the ground. It could be suicide, but there's no note." The official said the man did not appear to have any financial problems.?

A report on Greek news site Ta Nea?[link in Greek] said police were still trying to determine whether the death was an accident or suicide.

The incident happened at around 9 a.m., as tourists began arriving at Greece's most famous attraction, a 150-metre high, flat-topped rock which is the location of the 5th century BC Parthenon temple.?

In debt or jobless, many Italians choose suicide

The growing rate of suicide in Greece has come to symbolize the human toll of the country's unabated debt crisis, as repeated bouts of austerity drive Greeks to despair.?

The country's government, which took office after a June 17 election, says the suffering has become intolerable and it will ask the European Union at a two-day summit starting on Thursday to ease the punishing terms imposed in exchange for an international bailout.

Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is under huge public pressure to ease the burden of the IMF-EU bailout as he faces an opposition committed to tearing it up, which made strong gains in the election.?

'Martyr for Greece': Retiree's suicide sparks violent protests

Unable to attend the summit because of eye surgery at the weekend, Samaras sent a letter to EU leaders asking for a "different approach", a government spokesman said on Wednesday.?

He is unlikely to win much leeway, with euro zone paymaster Germany fiercely opposed to any let-up in the austerity.?

The suicide rate in Greece has shot up through five years of recession and two years of steep cuts to wages, pensions and jobs in exchange for two multi-billion-euro bailouts since 2010.?

Critics say the austerity has helped condemn the lifeless Greek economy to ever deeper recession, shuttering businesses and driving unemployment to almost 23 percent.?

Movie Review: Ted ? CBS Philly

(Mark Wahlberg stars in the buddy comedy 'Ted') (credit: Universal Pictures)

(Mark Wahlberg stars in the buddy comedy ?Ted?) (credit: Universal Pictures)

    By Bill Wine
    KYW Newsradio

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Some buddy comedies, even if they appear cute and cuddly at first glance, are hard to bear.? Not so the rude, crude, raucous, and lewd Ted, which teams a sorta grownup and a stuffed teddy bear.

The result?? A cascade of guilty-pleasure laughs.

    35 Movie Review: Ted

    (3 stars out of 4)

A childhood teddy bear that has arrived as a Christmas gift comes to life in Ted, which starts out as a Christmas fable and then asserts itself as a vulgar, irreverent and, most importantly, laugh-out-loud funny equal-opportunity-offensive comedy.

TV?s Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane makes his feature-film directorial debut, in addition to co-writing the script with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild based on his own story, and serves as one of the producers.

Mark Wahlberg, further demonstrating his comedy chops on the heels of 2010?s The Other Guys, stars as John Bennett, the bear?s owner, who as a lonely youngster in the 1980s lived and struggled to make friends in his small town just outside Boston.

It?s MacFarlane himself who provides the voice of the computer-animated, motion-capture bear, the boy?s only friend, who grants lonely eight-year-old John?s Christmas wish by coming to life and remaining his irresponsible, potty-mouthed, drug-taking, womanizing best friend well into his adult years.

This miraculous talking-bear happening not only turns Ted into a media sensation but John into an international celebrity in the eighties.? Years later, still childlike at age 35, John, who works indifferently as a rental-car agent, spends inordinate amounts of time drinking beer and smoking pot with Ted.

Mila Kunis (who?s done a voice on Family Guy for years) plays Lori, John?s long-suffering, live-in girlfriend of four years, waiting patiently for John to grow up and stop being a slacker.? But that?s easier said than done, especially with the raunchy, drink-and-drug-taking title character dispensing unsolicited advice to John around the clock.

Like a football widow who resents her husband?s obsession with watching sports, Lori struggles with sharing John with Ted.? So, because she believes that Ted is a big part of John?s arrested-development problem, she demands that he take some biblical advice and finally put away childish things.? Thus does she give him the inevitable Ted-or-Lori ultimatum.

Teddy bears notwithstanding, this is a decidedly R-rated offering with an anything-goes, push-the-bad-taste-envelope script that?s devoted to sweet-natured filth and is liberally peppered with eighties pop culture references.? MacFarlane makes Ted a vivid and commanding presence, aided by Wahlberg?s amazingly authentic interaction with him.? As was the case in The Other Guys, Wahlberg?s comedic strength is reacting to the laugh-producing force right next to him by playing it straight and providing somebody off of whom to bounce the jokes.

And no matter how one-dimensional watching a stuffed teddy bear talking dirty and flaunting taboos may sound, you?ll be amazed at the level of hilarity that?s not only achieved but sustained.

In addition, the smooth-as-silk special effects work, with Ted seamlessly integrated into the live action in a way that does not call a lot of attention to the process, helps to sell the effective central conceit and includes one of the funniest fight scenes ? between a guy and his teddy bear ? that you?ve ever seen.

MacFarlane, who also created American Dad and The Cleveland Show for television, originally conceived Ted as an animated TV series.? But enough inspired creative energy has been lavished on the narrative spine to make its translation into a feature film seem not only justified but inspired.? Wahlberg and MacFarlane develop a live actor/CG creature relationship that convinces as it entertains. And they provide the heart of a movie that, despite its snarky sense of humor, also generates surprising and considerable poignancy.

So we?ll grin and bear 3 stars out of 4.? The delightfully twisted and explosively funny Ted knocks ?em dead.

New York Times Debuts New Chinese Language Website

One of the benefits to China being an emerging market in the world is that there is now the possibility to gain access to 1.6 billion new customers. The New York Times, with its lagging subscriber base, is trying to do just that when they launched a Chinese language version of their site at cn.nytimes.com. They just have to hope that China?s ?Great Firewall? doesn?t block them out.

The biggest problem about having a Chinese language website is that you have to worry about the possibility of the Chinese government trying to shut you down. To combat this the New York Times Chinese service will be hosted on servers overseas, meaning that it does not have to abide by Chinese censorship directives. China is famous for heavily censoring what their citizens read. The Guardian tried to do this same thing in 2009 and was shut down after a couple of months.

Before you start to worry about the New York Times starting to write propaganda or bending to the strict censorship, their paper is already available to read in China on their regular English website. Joseph Kahn, the paper?s foreign editor said that Chinese government occasionally blocked certain articles from nytimes.com, but that ?We?re not tailoring it to the demands of the Chinese government,? he said. ?China operates a very vigorous firewall. We have no control over that. We hope and expect that Chinese officials will welcome what we?re doing.?

The site will feature around 30 articles a day on national, foreign and arts topics, in addition to editorials. Kahn said that two-thirds of the content would be translated from New York Times articles and one-third would be written by Chinese editors and local freelance journalists. I guess we will find out pretty soon if they will be shut down.

Some people think that orange county pe - Pest Control in Orange ...

Some people think that orange county pest control is something they can do on their own. While you may be able to buy some supplies from a local store and attempt to solve the problem, you never truly know what is right and what is wrong until you hire a professional. With the right team on your side, you will be well on your way to getting rid of pests once and for all - and that is what you truly want.

The main reason for wanting to solve this problem on your own is simple: you are looking for a way to save money. But before you start thinking this way, you need to keep a few things in mind.

First and foremost, hiring an Orange County pest control company is not nearly as expensive as many people believe. In fact, it can be quite affordable in many cases. You will never truly know how much it costs until you contact a qualified provider and ask for a quote. This is a great way to learn more about your problem while also picking up valuable information on the cost.

Secondly, you are going to spend a lot of money buying the supplies and equipment that you need in order to treat your own home. And guess what? You still may not get the level of results you are hoping for. There is no guarantee of success when you treat your own home. With this in mind, you could end up spending a lot of money and not seeing any change. How would that make you feel?

If you don't know the first thing about pest control, you need to contact a company in your area that is able to review your problem and lay out a plan that you are going to be comfortable with.

The time that it takes a professional to control your pest problem will be much quicker than what you are faced with.

This may sound like a do it yourself job on the surface, but think twice before you make the mistake of taking on this task without the help of a professional.

Remember, it may cost more money to hire a professional Orange County pest control company but in the long run you know that you are getting a high level of service. Along with this, you can be confident that your pest troubles will be solved sooner rather than later.

Before you do anything on your own, contact a company in your area to see what they have to offer somebody in your position. Soon enough, you will have more information on what you should and should not be doing. Along with this, you will have a clear understanding of how much it will cost to have your property treated.

For the most part, you need to hire a pest control company. This is the best way to solve your problem without tasking any risks. This is not a do it yourself job for most people. Instead, hire an Orange County pest control company that has a good reputation for getting the job done the first time around. No matter if you are interested in bee control Orange County or some other service, you will find that a pro can help.

DC Comics arrive on Nook Tablet, Barnes & Noble lets you watch, zoom the Watchmen

    Image

When we initially did our Nook Tablet / Kindle Fire battle royal, the choice between the devices for comics fans largely came down to the preference between the Marvel and DC universes. The lines, however, are blurring. Thanks to today's announcement, Justice League fans should find as much to love in the Nook Tablet and Color as Avengers devotees. DC has brought more than 100 graphic novels to the aforementioned devices and Android tablets running the Nook app. Barnes & Noble also used the opportunity to announce the new Zoom View feature, which lets readers focus on individual panels -- functionality that sounds fairly similar to what Comixology offers in its own popular app. For more information about Crisis on Infinite Nooks, check out the press release after the break.

(AP Photo/Michael Conroy, File)

(AP) ? The Indiana Pacers have parted ways with Larry Bird.

Owner Herb Simon announced the move Wednesday, one day before the NBA draft. He said Bird will stay on for the draft, when the Pacers are scheduled to pick No. 26 overall in the first round.

The 55-year-old Bird was the Pacers coach from 1997-2000, taking the team to its only NBA Finals appearance that final year, before returning to the front office in 2003. He took full control as president of basketball decisions after the 2007-08 season, when Donnie Walsh left to become the New York Knicks' president.

Walsh is returning as the Pacers' president. Kevin Pritchard, the director of player personnel, is being promoted to general manager, replacing David Morway, who resigned Tuesday.

Bird said health issues were among the reasons for his departure.

"I just think it's time," he said.

Bird had said just a month ago that he wanted to stay and expressed interest in a three-year deal rather than the annual "handshake" agreements he had with Simon. Bird recently was named the NBA Executive of the Year after building a tough, young team that lost to eventual champion Miami in six games in the playoffs.

The former Indiana State star won three MVP awards and three NBA titles during his Hall of Fame career with Boston.

Comprehensive strategy includes more accurate CT scan analysis, complex surgical technique

Chicago (June 27, 2012, 12:01 am [CDT]): Investigators at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, have reported on a new approach to treating previously inoperable complex pancreatic adenocarcinoma that has significantly increased long-term survival for some patients. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is one of the most devastating forms of pancreatic cancer with survival rates of only 5 percent at five years. Surgical removal of these tumors offers a chance for cure, but it is estimated that only about 20 percent of patients can undergo this treatment. The tumor in the pancreas often grows into adjacent vital blood vessels, and this is the most common reason a surgeon will consider pancreatic cancer to be inoperable and incurable. However, the MD Anderson investigators have achieved an important milestone in the surgical treatment of the disease in terms of improving prognosis for patients who meet the criteria for a newly developed protocol.

In a study published in the July issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the investigators reported on 88 patients who had been told their tumors were inoperable after an initial surgical attempt at removal, 66 of whom completed a multidisciplinary treatment regimen with successful tumor removal. This approach has been refined at MD Anderson over the last 20 years and involves a more accurate and collaborative interpretation of CT scans of the tumor between surgeons and radiologists; chemotherapy and radiation treatment of the tumor; and finally an advanced approach to surgical resection with planned removal and reconstruction of involved vital blood vessels near the tumor.

"We've been able to achieve survival numbers for these patients that are comparable to those receiving surgery for clearly operable tumors," reported lead study author Jason B. Fleming, MD, FACS. On average, patients in this study lived about 30 months after tumor removal, which is almost three times longer than the 11 months for patients who are never able to have their tumors surgically removed.

The study enrolled high-risk patients who had been originally diagnosed at outside institutions with operable, localized cancer. However, at their initial operations the intent to remove the tumor was aborted when the disease turned out to be more extensive than originally detected.

The study involved a cohort of patients referred to MD Anderson from 1990 to 2010, many of whom were ultimately able to undergo a successful operation to remove the tumors. While the results of small series and isolated cases in which this approach was used have been published, this is the largest study including only those patients who had a previous unsuccessful attempt to remove the tumor, according to Dr. Fleming.

The pancreas is located in the back of the abdomen, near vital arteries and veins that provide blood to the intestines and liver. If the tumor encroaches on these vessels, the operation to remove the tumor can also involve reconstructing these important blood vessels, raising the complexity of the procedure. Reconstructing these vessels in a way that restores appropriate blood flow is critical for the overall wellness and survivability of patients after the operation.

The investigators stratified each patient's risk for metastatic disease based on tumor involvement with local blood vessels, suspicious biopsy results and the nature of the tumor, and overall health status aside from pancreatic cancer. Patients who met these criteria underwent the protocol.

The key to screening patients for treatment and staging of their cancer is radiographic imaging, specifically in the interpretation of CT scans of the tumors before the operation, Dr. Fleming explained. "The interpretation needs to be performed in conjunction with the radiologist, but also with heavy involvement by the surgeon," he said. "The goal should be to give the surgeon a clear idea of tumor location and vessel involvement before beginning the operation," he said.

The MD Anderson protocol also uses a scoring system along with structured documentation for the radiologist to more accurately assess the extent of tumor-vessel involvement, according to Dr. Fleming. "With good imaging and good interpretation you have a high likelihood of being able to predict involvement of the vessels before surgical treatment, not after," he said. About 46 percent of the patients in this study required some type of vascular resection, according to Dr. Fleming.

Of the 88 patients enrolled in the study, 50 of them came from academic centers, 25 from community hospitals, and 13 from international centers. However, hospital type and surgeon skill are not necessarily indicators of the setting in which this protocol can be used, Dr. Fleming said. Removing the pancreatic tumor and then sparing the veins and arteries requires not only a high level of technical surgical skill but also a focused team of medical specialists collaborating on complex pancreatic cancer, Dr. Fleming said.

The MD Anderson study underscores the need for patients with inoperable pancreatic adenocarcinoma to seek out a second opinion, Dr. Fleming said. "I would say to these patients and loved ones that it is important to advocate for yourself and your family, to seek out opinions, and not necessarily go with the first thing you hear as the answer," Dr. Fleming said. "This study is an example of patients who have benefited by persisting. 'Hope exists' is the message we want these patients to hear," he concluded.

DirecTV quietly shifts n3D channel from 24/7 to part-time broadcasts

Nearly two years after launching its n3D channel broadcasting 3D content around the clock, DirecTV has reduced the channel to part-time programing hours as of June 1st. Whether the change is due to a lack of fresh content or viewer adoption is unclear and DirecTV's bland statement about waiting for both to grow doesn't hint either way, that the change had gone largely unreported for nearly a month does not bode well. In the meantime, 3Net and ESPN 3D continue to broadcast unabated with the latter going live from Wimbledon this week, and DirecTV has confirmed it will be airing tape delayed 3D footage from the Olympics provided by NBC this summer. After seeing all the early HD-only channels fall by the wayside we're not at all surprised to see this one go dark at least part-time, but the question will be whether 3D uptake is fast enough to keep broadcasters interested going forward.

    [Thanks, KM]
