Air passengers in China experience the world's most disrupted travel plans, according to a report which names two of the country's major airports and its leading airlines among the most delayed.

Beijing International Airport is the world's most delayed airport, with just 18.3 percent of commercial passenger flights leaving on schedule, the report claims.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport reported the second worst departure record with 23.5 percent leaving on time, according to the study by FlightStats, a US-based air travel information service.

About 42 percent of flights from Beijing and 40 percent of flights from Shanghai suffered delays of 45 minutes or longer, the statistics said.

The report monitored figures throughout June in 35 major international airports.

Flightstats also said eight of the 10 worst-performing Asian airlines in terms of delays were Chinese carriers, without giving reasons.

(AP) ? Tens of thousands of Islamists rallied Friday in cities across Egypt, vowing to sustain for months their campaign to restore deposed President Mohammed Morsi to power.

Ten days after the military coup that toppled him, however, Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and its allies appear to have failed to bring a significantly wider segment of Egyptian society into the streets on their side.

The new military-backed administration of interim President Mansour Adly, along with the grand imam of Al-Azhar, the most prominent Sunni Muslim institution, floated offers for "national reconciliation." Newly appointed Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi is reportedly promising to finish assembling his Cabinet by next week, a government official told Egypt's state news agency. A presidential spokesman has said the Muslim Brotherhood will be offered posts.

The Brotherhood remains steadfast in its opposition, saying its supporters will stay in the streets for as long as it takes to force the reinstatement of Morsi, who was overthrown July 3 after four days of massive protests demanding his ouster.

At the main Islamist rally in Cairo, the crowd poured into a large boulevard in front of the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque, where Morsi supporters have been camped for two weeks.

Egyptian flags, which were fewer in their previous rallies, outnumbered the usual green Islamic banners emblazoned with the Muslim profession of faith ? a move to show their movement's broader appeal. Chants and slogans focused on the military, many branding the army chief a "traitor."

"We are ready to stay for a month, two months, a year, or even two years," ultraconservative Salafi cleric Safwat Hegazi told protesters from a stage.

The demonstrators there seem to have dug in for a long sit-in. Tents have been erected and toilets have been set up with brick walls for privacy. Protesters with helmets, homemade body shields and sticks guarded the site, which has drawn Morsi supporters from other provinces.

Army troops are staying about a kilometer (half-mile) away to avoid direct confrontations. On Monday, there were clashes with security forces near the Republican Guard headquarters not far from the site, with more than 50 people killed. Both sides blamed the other for the bloodshed.

Friday's call for demonstrations had sparked fears of further clashes but no violence was reported.

Now that the holy month of Ramadan has begun, when Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset, many of the protesters rested in their tents, reading the Quran or sleeping. After nightfall, the crowd got renewed energy.

"We have a daily routine of prayers and Quran recitations, then marches around the sit-in," said Hassan al-Ghandoor, a tailor from the Nile Delta who arrived on the day of the military coup and hasn't left since.

"The level of spirituality of this place helps us put up with the daily difficulties," he said. "We are here for an objective, and we will stay here until it is accomplished."

Thousands more rallied across the Nile River in city of Giza, and Morsi supporters held a series of marches around the capital, converging on the main site. Protests were held in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and other cities.

The Brotherhood and other Islamists face the question of how to step up their campaign. So far, they have succeeded in bringing out strong numbers of their own ranks ? but there has been little sign of attracting a larger segment of the population.

Morsi supporters have touted their movement as a defense of democracy against a military coup that removed an elected leader, warning that the army is turning Egypt back to dictatorship.

At the same time, however, many of its leaders use the rhetoric that appeals mainly to their political base.

Those opposed to Morsi were able to bring out millions in protests that began June 30 and demanded the president's removal.

Since his fall, those rallies have tapered off, although a crowd was in Tahrir Square on Friday evening for the traditional fast-breaking meal at sunset. The gathering was not intended to be a show of strength by the anti-Morsi camp.

The new administration is moving quickly with its transition, in part to force the Brotherhood to accept it and to show that Egypt is pressing ahead toward democracy.

At the same time, authorities are making allegations aimed at showing Morsi supporters are linked to violence and militancy.

While speaking of reconciliation, the interim leadership has intensified its crackdown on the Brotherhood, starting criminal investigations against Morsi and issuing arrest warrants for other members of the group.

A number of Brotherhood leaders with arrest warrants issued against them are staying at a medical center connected to the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque, Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref told The Associated Press, although he underlined that they are not hiding from arrest.

The Brotherhood's top leader, Mohammed Badie, is not at the site, Aref said, adding that he did not know where he was.

Morsi has been held in an undisclosed military facility since the coup.

On Friday, the U.S. joined Germany in calling for his release. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States agrees with the German Foreign Ministry, which has urged an "end to all restrictive measures considering Morsi."

Five other Brotherhood leaders are also in detention on various charges, and 10 others ? including Badie ?have arrest warrants against them on accusations of inciting violence.

Gehad el-Haddad, the group's spokesman, said in a message posted on his Twitter account that those in detention are "denied visitation, or delivery of clothes, food. All held in solitary confinement."

Prosecutors said they will investigate allegations that Morsi and 30 others Brotherhood leaders escaped from prison in 2011 with help from the Palestinian militant group Hamas. That jailbreak occurred amid the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Anger at the military was rife at Friday's rallies. Posters emblazoned with the word "Traitor" depicted army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi with blood coming from his mouth. Some banners appeared aimed at the foreign media, with English slogans such as, "Legitimacy is a red line" ? emphasizing Morsi's win at the ballot box.

"Did el-Sissi sell his religion cheaply?" one speaker on the Rabaah al-Adawiya stage asked.

"Leave, el-Sissi!" the crowd replied.

"We are designated martyrs," the speaker added. "We call on el-Sissi and those who participated in this grand treason to repent."

Speaking to the AP, the Brotherhood spokesman el-Haddad said the rally was growing, a continuation of the 2011 uprising that had been centered at Tahrir Square.

"This is exactly what we did in Tahrir during the revolution. We are doing it here," he said, adding that the Brotherhood can "keep functioning under a repressive police state."

He said its support was growing, "and more locations in Cairo will come. We are not talking in weeks ? we are talking in months."

Mostafa Youssef, 27-year-old cleric, described interim President Adly Mansour and his administration as "puppets while the real power is in the hand of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces. Civilians are just a facade."

Officials in the sole Islamist party that backed Morsi's removal, the Salafi Al-Nour, argued that the Brotherhood had to accept reality and said the party was reaching out through mediators to try to convince it.

"I know the Muslim Brotherhood has stamina," said Amro Mekki, a senior Al-Nour figure. "We can disagree on whether this is a coup or a revolution, but there is a reality on the ground, and we have to deal with it not in a negative way."

He said the Brotherhood needs to move into an opposition position within the new system.

Book Review : A Piece of the Sun: The Quest for Fusion Energy by Daniel Clery

Review by Andrew Grant

By Daniel Clery

Web edition: July 11, 2013
Print edition: July 27, 2013; Vol.184 #2 (p. 30)

It?s not a great time to be a scientist studying fusion. U.S. experiments such as the $3.5 billion National Ignition Facility are losing funding (SN: 4/20/13, p. 26), while a $20 billion international project called ITER is delayed and over budget. Clery, a science writer, chronicles these setbacks, along with 70 years? worth of others, in efforts to harness the process that lights up the stars.

Clery gives a detailed and workmanlike history of the worldwide quest to exploit fusion as an energy source. He describes persuasively how politics and economics, particularly during the Cold War, stalled progress. Clery is far less critical of the key scientists involved than was his former colleague Charles Seife, who argued in his entertaining 2008 book Sun in a Bottle that fusion research is plagued by narcissists and wishful thinkers.

Clery optimistically claims early in the book that ?one day the operators of ITER, or some other reactor, will get their settings just right, the plasma will get hot, stay hot and burn like a piece of the sun.? That would be a big achievement, but it?s not the same thing as creating a practical fusion power plant, as Clery himself later points out. In fact, Clery never follows through on his initial optimism; he seems resigned to the idea that fusion won?t become a research priority until all other energy options are exhausted.

Clery?s book is a solid no-nonsense primer for those interested in fusion?s history, but it won?t change many minds about whether fusion has a place in our energy future.

Gay marriage: Opponents ask California Supreme Court to enforce ban

Lawyers representing gay-marriage opponents say a federal judge acted beyond his authority when he ordered officials to permit and recognize same-sex marriages throughout California.

Lawyers representing proponents of the Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage in California have not given up an effort to enforce the ban, despite a US Supreme Court ruling two weeks ago that opened the way for resumption of gay marriage in the state.

On Friday, the Prop. 8 lawyers asked the California Supreme Court to intervene and order state officials to stop issuing marriage licenses to gay men and lesbians.

County clerks across California have been issuing such marriage licenses since June 28.

Legal analysts called the effort a long shot. It may mark the last legal skirmish in California over same-sex marriage.

In a 66-page motion, lawyers with ProtectMarriage said that California officials lack the necessary authority to permit same-sex couples across the state to marry.

They said that the US Supreme Court did not address the constitutionality of Prop. 8 and that a federal judge acted beyond his authority when he ordered officials to permit and recognize same-sex marriages throughout the state.

As a result, these lawyers said, the ban on gay marriage is still in force throughout most of California.

?Everyone on all sides of the marriage debate should agree that the legal process must be followed. Public officials should enforce the marriage amendment because they are not bound by the district court?s injunction,? said Austin Nimrocks, a lawyer with Alliance Defending Freedom, which is supporting the Prop. 8 litigation.

Some legal analysts have questioned whether the federal judge in the Prop. 8 case overstepped his power when he issued a statewide injunction blocking the same-sex marriage ban. They suggest that the judge had the power to authorize the marriage of the two same-sex couples who litigated the issue and won. But it is unclear whether his sweeping statewide order allowing gay marriage in all 58 counties was proper.

Despite that lingering question, California officials, including Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and Attorney General Kamala Harris, moved quickly in late June to encourage each of California?s 58 county clerks to begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses.

Prop 8. supporters said the action was improper.

?The urgent need to prevent state officials? attempt to overrun a constitutional initiative ... calls for this Court to intervene and breathe enforcement life into Proposition 8,? Andrew Pugno of ProtectMarriage wrote in his motion.

?Should this Court abstain from granting the relief requested, the end result will be to allow one federal district judge ? empowered by state officials who openly advocated for and ceded to Proposition 8?s demise ? to nullify a constitutional initiative approved by more than seven million voters,? Mr. Pugno said.

The action comes two weeks after the US Supreme Court declared that supporters of the Prop. 8 ban lacked legal authority to defend the measure in court. The justices vacated a federal appeals court ruling in the case, Hollingsworth v. Perry, but left intact the federal judge?s decision invalidating the ban on same-sex marriage.

In their motion to the California high court, the Prop. 8 lawyers said that state officials are required to enforce existing laws ? including Prop. 8 ? until an appellate court has declared the measure unconstitutional.

Since the Supreme Court invalidated the federal appeals court?s decision in Hollingsworth v. Perry, state officials must continue to enforce the ballot measure in jurisdictions not covered by the judge?s order, they said.

?The Ninth Circuit?s decision in Perry has been vacated; hence there is no appellate decision holding that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional,? the motion said. ?Petitioners are thus entitled to a writ of mandate requiring Respondents to comply with state law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.?

Ex-prisoner chosen to lead Syria opposition group

(AP) ? A former Syrian political prisoner with close links to Saudi Arabia was picked Saturday to lead Syria's main Western-backed opposition group, filling a post long vacant due to divisions among President Bashar Assad's opponents.

Inside Syria, government troops advanced into rebel-held areas of the central city of Homs, pushing into a heavily contested neighborhood after pummeling it with artillery that drove out opposition fighters, an activist said.

The election of Ahmad al-Jarba as the head of the Syrian National Coalition came during a meeting in Turkey in what was the second attempt in recent months by Assad's opponents to unify their ranks.

The opposition bloc is primarily composed of exiled politicians with little support among Syrians back home who are trying to survive the third summer of conflict that has killed more than 93,000 people and forced millions to flee their homes.

Al-Jarba's election suggests the opposition is trying to unite despite its differences after Assad's forces gained ground last month in and around the strategic town of Qusair near the border with Lebanon.

It also underscored the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Qatar who are vying for influence among the Sunni-dominated Syrian opposition. Both have been prominent backers of forces struggling to oust Assad.

The Saudi-backed al-Jarba won 55 votes, edging out Qatar-endorsed businessman Mustafa Sabbagh who got 52 votes, according to a statement from the 114-member SNC in Istanbul, where many of Syrian opposition figures are based. The SNC statement did not say who the remaining members voted for.

Al-Jarba, a 44-year-old lawyer with a law degree from Beirut's Arab University, is from Syria's northeastern province of Hassakeh and is a member of the powerful Shammar tribe that extends into Iraq. He was a little-known anti-Assad figure before Syria's civil war though he was detained in March 2011 ? days after the uprising against Assad began. It was his second arrest, following one in 1996 when he was held for two years because of anti-government activities.

After his release, al-Jarba left Syria in August in 2011 and became active in the opposition. He is close to secular politician Michel Kilo's Democratic Bloc, which recently joined the SNC. Al-Jarba could not be immediately reached for comment after his election Saturday.

An SNC statement quoted him as saying that his priorities will be "to follow-up on the situation inside Syria, especially in Homs," and that "all efforts should be in this direction."

But even with al-Jarba's election, it is unclear if the SNC can overcome deep divisions among its politicians.

Also, the council has in many ways become irrelevant to rebels battling regime troops in Syria, despite its appointment in March of Ghassan Hitto as head of an interim government meant to administer areas seized by the rebels. So far, Hitto has not formed a Cabinet.

The vote in Turkey came as the U.S. and Russia hope to bring the warring sides in Syria together at an international conference in Geneva. The SNC said recently it will not attend the Geneva talks unless they are about Assad handing over power.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. welcomed al-Jarba's election and would work with him "to prevent the total collapse of Syria into chaos."

The U.S. also urged the Syrian opposition to unite, Psaki said, adding that a "united opposition is essential to achieve a negotiated solution."

Assad has repeatedly dismissed his political opponents as foreign-directed exiles who don't represent the people of Syria. The president also has shrugged off international calls to step down, saying he will serve the rest of his term and may consider running for another one in next year's presidential elections.

In Syria, meanwhile, government troops gained ground in the rebel-held Khaldiyeah district of Homs. The push was the first significant gain in the city for Assad's forces. Government troops have been waging an eight-day campaign to seize parts of the central Syrian city that has been in rebel hands for more than a year.

Tariq Badrakhan, an activist based in the neighborhood, said government troops used rockets, mortars and cannon fire to flush out the area's "first line of defenses" on Friday evening. The offensive continued Saturday morning, he said via Skype, as explosions were heard in the background.

"We feel like they are shaking the sky," Badrakhan told The Associated Press.

Another activist said eight rebels were killed in the fighting. He requested anonymity because rebels have accused him in the past of damaging their morale by reporting their casualties. He could not confirm that government forces had entered Khaldiyeh but said the report was consistent with the fighting he was following there. State-run media said government forces had seized buildings in the nearby Bab Houd area.

Fighting also continued Saturday in the northern city of Aleppo, a crucial stronghold for the rebels, as well as the Damascus suburb of Qaboun.

The Syrian conflict, which began with months of peaceful protests against the Assad regime more than two years ago, deteriorated into an all-out civil war after a violent government crackdown.

Government forces, sometimes backed by fighters of the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, have recently launched a major countrywide offensive to reclaim territory lost to rebels, who operate in chaotic groups with ideologies ranging from secular to hard-line Islamic extremists. Hard-line Sunni Muslims from other countries have also joined the fighting.

The fighting in Syria has increasingly taken on sectarian undertones as Assad enjoys support from many in his Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while the rebels are mainly Sunnis.

Activists, who consider Homs "the capital of the revolution," say the regime wants to capture the entire city to include it in a future Alawite state stretching to the coast, where many believe Assad would take refuge in a last resort.

In the vote in Turkey, the SNC also elected three vice presidents, including Mohammed Farouk Taifour, a senior official with Syria's Muslim Brotherhood. The other two vice presidents are Salem al-Muslit and prominent opposition figure Suhair Atassi. Badr Jamous was voted in as the SNC's secretary general.

Crude Oil Price - July 8, 2013

By: DailyForex.com

The WTI Crude Oil markets had a positive session on Friday as the nonfarm payroll numbers came out showing that the Americans added 195,000 jobs to the economy in June. Needless to say this is a much stronger number than what was expected. Because of this, there is an anticipation of stronger demand for oil, and as a result oil prices could rise even as the dollar did.

On top of that, we saw more violence in Egypt as the political crisis continues. There is a certain amount of fear that the Suez Canal will be closed, but quite frankly I think that's one of the most ridiculous scenarios out there. After all, the Egyptian military is very well aware of the fact that they would not exist without financial aid from the Americans, and as a result have a certain amount of loyalty to Washington. Besides that, the Egyptian economy has only one thing working for them at the moment: the revenue collected from the Suez Canal. Tourism is absolutely decimated in Egypt now, and as a result it's hard for me to believe that the military will allow the one working part of the economy to fall apart for no apparent reason.

Crude Oil Price Chart

As far as I'm concerned, this market looks a bit overdone and ridiculous as far as I can tell. After all, this parabolic move is a bit overdone, and the fact that we are now trading at $103.22 a barrel also is a bit overdone. With the parabolic move like this, there is often a very violent and swift correction, which is the play I am waiting for. I do not see the resistive candle yet, but I have a hard time believing that this market will move above the $105.00 level without some type of serious problem. This would be counter to economic growth as well, and $105.00 a barrel without a doubt would slow down the US economy, which would take away one of the positive factors for this market. On top of that, as I said above, the canal is not going to be closed, and as soon as the markets accepts that fact - look out below.

Prez Mahama Interacts With Ghana Railway Workers Union

President John Mahama on Thursday held a closed door meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Railway Workers Union.

Accompanied by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the railway workers presented a petition to the President after the discussions.

Present were the Chief of Staff Prosper Bani, Transport Minister Dzifa Attivor and her Deputy, Joyce Bawa.

The discussions centered on a number of issues including a request to government to revamp and improve the capacity of the Board and Management of the Ghana Railway Company, the need for more investment in the Company to make it productive and able to generate its own revenue to support operations and expedited payment of overdue salaries to members.

The workers contended that with adequate investment, the Ghana Railway Company can become self-sufficient like the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
